Maria’s most recent opera productions include Donnerstaf Aus Licht, Der Rosenkavalier and Tales of Hoffman at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Die Valkyre, Toussaint L’Overture and The Gambler for the English National Opera at the Coliseum; The Queen of Spades for the Nederlander Opera; and Katya Kabanova and Jenufa for the Houston Opera.

In 1983, Maria was the winner of the gold medal at the Prague Biennale for her work on The Janacek Cycle at the Welsh National Opera.

Maria’s theatre work includes Hamlet, The Tempest, Measure for Measure and A Midsummer Night’s Dream for the Royal Shakespeare Compan; The Cherry Orchard for the Chichester Festival and The Lonely Road at the Old Vic.

The Phantom of the Opera was Maria’s 75th production and won her a Tony Award for Best Design, along with Awards from the Critics Outer Circle, Drama Desk and Drama Magazine. Since then Maria has designed Carmen for the ENO and Figaro for the Grant Theatre in Geneva as well as Follies at the Shaftesbury Theatre.
