The first major revival in South Africa of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Don Black and Charles Hart’s devastatingly beautiful musical Aspects of Love will present a premiere season exclusively on The Mandela stage of the Joburg Theatre, following a highly successful UK tour.
“Beautifully directed by Nikolai Foster, this fine touring production establishes this as Lloyd Webber’s most mature and heartfelt musical,” reported Britain’s Sunday Express recently. The production, re-directed in South Africa by Nikolai Foster and designed by Robert Jones, will run for 44 performances only, with a cast and additional creative team completely sourced in South Africa.
South Africa’s leading lady of musical theatre Samantha Peo, following her personal triumphs in both Chicago and Thoroughly Modern Millie, returns to the Joburg Theatre stage to play the sophisticated sculptor Giulietta Trapani in Aspects of Love, while Robert Finlayson, after taking some years away from his youthful fame in South Africa to play leading roles in such musicals as and Miss Saigon in London’s West End, has been cast as the devastatingly handsome and epitome of young English gentlemen, Alex Dillingham.
Angela Kilian, who has built legions of local fans playing the leading roles in Gauteng theatres in recent years in The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady and The King and I, will star as the highly strung, fiery and temperamental actress Rose Vibert. Keith Smith, well remembered by South African audiences from his performances in A Touch of Webber and a Taste of Rice and Sun City Extravaganza Come to the Sun, completes the star casting of Aspects of Love as the witty and exceptionally cultured George Dillingham.
Also appearing in Aspects of Love are Sharon Spiegel, Michelle Botha, Dean Roberts, Pierre van Heerden, Dane Paarman, Aidan Lithgow, Megan Carelse, Jolanda Becker, Ntambo Rapatla, Sarah Richard, Jacques Le Roux and Jaco van Rensburg.
With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Don Black and Charles Hart and a book adaptation by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on the novel by David Garnett, the South African re-staging of the St Martins Productions’ UK tour will be produced by the Joburg Theatre in association with St Martins Productions. Bernard Jay, CEO of the theatre, serves as Executive Producer, with Simon James and Claire Pacariz as Associate Producers.
“Having just announced the thrilling news that the Joburg Theatre will produce Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ben Elton’s on The Mandela stage for the FIFA World Cup 2010,” says Jay, “I am even more delighted that Michael Harrison and Kenny Wax of St Martins Productions and Andrew himself have approved our theatre as the first venue outside of the UK tour for this musical event of the year.”
Aspects of Love is presented at the Joburg Theatre in association with M-Net.
