The London productions of The Phantom of the Opera and The Wizard of Oz were today announced as winners in the 2011 BroadwayWorld UK Awards.

The BroadwayWorld UK Awards are the largest ticket buyer-driven awards program of their kind, inviting West End theatre fans to cast their votes online for their favourite shows and UK productions. Tens of thousands of fans took part in this year’s awards, with 5,000 votes cast on the last day alone.

The Phantom of the Opera – which this year celebrated 25 years in London’s West End – won in the Best Long Running West End Show category, while the show’s incredible 25th Anniversary performance at the Royal Albert Hall was voted Theatrical Event of the Year.

The Wizard of Oz, currently continuing to delight audiences at the London Palladium, won five awards: Best Choreography – Arlene Phillips, Best Featured Actor in a Musical – Michael Crawford, Best Leading Actress in a Musical – Danielle Hope, Best Musical (tied with Rock of Ages) and Best Orchestrations – David Cullen.
