The Broadway production of Evita, starring Ricky Martin and Elena Roger, was this week nominated for an incredible five Outer Critics Circle Awards and also secured three Drama League nominations.
The Outer Critics Circle is the official organisation of writers covering New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers, national publications and other media beyond Broadway. The Critics Circle awards are the first major Broadway/Off-Broadway award nominees of the New York theater season. This year’s nominations were announced yesterday at The Friars Club. The Broadway production of Evita – currently playing at The Marquis Theatre – was nominated in the following categories:
OUTSTANDING REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL
OUTSTANDING DIRECTOR OF A MUSICAL for Michael Grandage
OUTSTANDING CHOREOGRAPHER for Rob Ashford
OUTSTANDING SET DESIGN for Christopher Oram
OUTSTANDING LIGHTING DESIGN for Neil Austin
Evita was also this week nominated for three Drama League Awards with two of its stars, Ricky Martin and Elena Roger, both up for the DISTINGUISHED PERFORMANCE AWARD. Evita was also joined by another Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice Broadway revival, Jesus Christ Superstar, in being nominated for the DISTINGUISHED REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL Award. Jesus Christ Superstar, now playing at The Neil Simon Theatre, opened on Broadway last month after winning rave reviews at The Stratford Shakespeare Festival and the La Jolla Playhouse.
The 78th Annual Drama League Awards will be held at the Marriott Marquis Times Square on Friday, May 18, 2012 at noon.
