Back in April, the Long Eaton Operatic Society joined a growing list of amateur groups in taking their turn to perform The Likes of Us, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s first collaboration with his Joseph and Jesus Christ Superstar writing partner Tim Rice, originally written in 1965.
The Likes of Us tells the story of Dr Thomas Barnardo, who rescued homeless children from the streets of Victorian London and provided them with shelter, with Barnado’s Homes going on to become famous all over the world.
The Long Eaton Operatic Society’s production of The Likes of Us, which featured teenager Sam Barson as Dr Thomas Barnardo and Mandy Walker as his wife Syrie Elmslie, follows the show’s exclusive release in June 2008 to the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA). This gave amateur groups the chance to stage their own productions before any professional release of The Likes of Us.
