John Gladstone Smith studied piano with Ronald Smith and began his professional career as pianist with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.
Theatre : Musical director for The Beautiful Game (Cambridge Theatre); musical director/arranger for On the Wings of A Dream (Bridewell Theatre); Nine (Cochrane Theatre); conducted several West End productions including Saturday Night Fever, Jesus Christ Superstar, Starlight Express and Hot Mikado. He has played piano and keyboards for numerous shows including the world première of Sunset Boulevard.
Concerts : Conducted Sounds of the West End with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Redcar Chorus and 124 Stagecoach children to an audience of 8000 (Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough); pianist for Michael Crawford on his national tour; numerous performances with the National Symphony Orchestra.
Television : Credits include Martine McCutcheon - By Popular Demand, The Jerry Springer Show and Over Here with Martin Clunes.
Recording : Musical director/arranger/producer of the Dangerous Cabaret album featuring the songs of Brett Kahr with Rosemary Ashe, Alison Jiear, Tim Flavin and Sharon D Clarke amongst others; played piano and keyboards on the cast recording of Sunset Boulevard, Starlight Express On Ice; soundtrack recording of Cats (Really Useful Films); recordings with the National Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, John Dankworth, John Williams, Paul Hart, Roadside Picnic, Take That, Najma Akhtar and Talvin Singh.
Composition : Orchestral music for KPM used in Catherine the Great in South Africa and on television in Japan, Mexico and the USA; film scores for The Panther, Frank’s Delay directed by Nadia Essberger, The Perfect Game directed by Lino Russell, Gaia’s Dance directed by Limor Roichman; the score for the cartoon series Mimi and the Gang directed by Myriam Ballesteros.
