  • Jesus Christ Superstar opened on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Theatre on 12th October 1971. In 1972, Jesus Christ Superstar exploded onto the West End stage and changed the face of musical theatre forever.
  • By 1980 after 3,358 performances it had become the longest running musical in West End history.
  • In 1992, an Australian concert version in a series of vast arenas broke all the box office records at the time attracting an audience of over one million. The soundtrack made it to the top of the US charts three times.
  • In 1996 Jesus Christ Superstar re-opened the Lyceum Theatre in London's West End and ran for two years before starting a major UK Tour.
  • The UK touring production re-designed by Peter Davison and re-directed by Gale Edwards opened to critical and public acclaim in Newcastle Upon Tyne in August 1998.
  • After an 18 month sell-out UK tour the production then transferred to Essen,Germany where it closed on April 23rd 2000.
  • A version of this production was filmed at Pinewood Studios for video release during 2000 and 2001.
  • April 2000 saw the opening of a limited engagement on Broadway at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts closing on September 3rd.
  • The 1973 film starring Ted Neeley as Jesus, Carl Anderson as Judas and Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene took £8.6 million at the Box Office.
  • Jesus Christ Superstar has been staged in over 15 countries including Kenya, Mexico, Zimbabwe and Israel.
  • A Japanese kabuki production played at London's Dominion Theatre in 1992.
  • Jesus Christ Superstar still holds the record as the fifth longest running musical in the history of the West End. It was beaten from the top spot by three other Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals - Cats, Starlight Express and The Phantom of the Opera.
  • Jesus Christ Superstar was banned in South Africa where it was deemed to be irreligious.
