Kate Young

 

Musical Director

 

Kate Young was born in Edinburgh and made her debut, aged ten, playing Haydn's D Major Piano Concerto in the city's Usher Hall. She studied piano at the Royal Northern College of Music, from where she graduated with honours in 1982. Her debut in theatre was singing in the choir of a touring production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in 1975!

 

Since coming to London, she has played keyboards on many West End shows including: The Pirates of Penzance; Cats, Singin' in the Rain; Snoopy; Mr Cinders; Wayne Sleep and Dash; Les Miserables and Chess.

 

Her conducting experience as Assistant Musical Director includes such shows as: The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Sugar Babies with Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller (Savoy Theatre). Kate's many Musical Director credits in London include: the award-winning The Hired Man (Astoria); Wonderful Town (Queen's Theatre); Mandragola (Royal National Theatre); Dory Previn In Concert (Donmar Warehouse); Girlfriends (Playhouse); Starlight Express (Apollo Victoria); and Do I Hear A Waltz? (Guildhall). In Repertory Theatre credits include: Side By Side By Sondheim, No Way To Treat A Lady, Mixed Blessings and Just So (Watermill and Tricycle Theatre). She was Musical Director for the album of Bodywork by Richard Stilgoe and performed in the original workshop productions of Aspects of Love and Sunset Boulevard at Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sydmonton Festival.

 

Kate recently appeared with percussionist Evelyn Glennie in Seasons at The Chichester Festival. She is also a composer, having written the music for Infidelities at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith and was a finalist in the 1987 and 1989 Vivian Ellis Prize - where she has also been Musical Director for the last two years. Most recently, she composed a section for The Challenge, produced at the Shaw Theatre by The Mercury Workshop.
