Lighting Design

For the past ten years, Hugh Vanstone has designed the lighting for plays, musicals and operas in London, New York and around the world.

Theatre: Recent work includes The Breath of Life directed by Howard Davies (Theatre Royal, Haymarket); The Lady From the Sea (Almeida), The Cherry Orchard (Royal National Theatre), both directed by Trevor Nunn; Twelfth Night, Uncle Vanya, The Blue Room, The Front Page all directed by Sam Mendes (Donmar Warehouse); Howard Katz (RNT), The Caretaker (Comedy Theatre) both directed by Patrick Marber; Mouth To Mouth directed by Ian Rickson (Royal Court and Albery Theatres); The Graduate directed by Terry Johnson (Gielgud Theatre, US tour and Australia); Dance of the Vampires directed by Roman Polanski (Vienna and Stuttgart); Bombay Dreams (Apollo Victoria Theatre), Dr Dolittle (Apollo, Hammersmith), Nathan the Wise (Chichester Festival Theatre), Antony and Cleopatra (RSC) all directed by Steven Pimlott; Orpheus Descending (Donmar Warehouse), The Lady In the Van (Queen’s Theatre) both directed by Nicholas Hytner; Juno and the Paycock directed by John Crowley (Donmar Warehouse); Life x3 (RNT, Old Vic, Savoy and Broadway), Art (Wyndham’s and Whitehall Theatres, UK and US tours, Australia), Follies (New York), The Unexpected Man (RSC, Duchess Theatre, New York and Los Angeles); The Winter’s Tale (RSC at The Roundhouse) all directed by Matthew Warchus; Blast! (Apollo, Hammersmith and US tour).

Opera: Dialogues des Carmélites (ENO), Carmen (Opera North) both directed by Phyllida Lloyd; The Bartered Bride directed by Nikolaus Lehnhoff (Glyndebourne).

Awards: Laurence Olivier award for 2001 for The Cherry Orchard and The Graduate and the 1999 award for The Unexpected Man and The Blue Room; National Broadway Theatre award 2002 for Blast! (Broadway and current US tour).
