Starlight Express Bochum’s Emma-Katie Adcock, who covers Buffy, Ashley and Components and is a Swing in the ever-popular German-language version of the show, answers a few of our questions in the latest of our series of Q&A’s with members of the cast.
How long have you been in the show in Bochum?
I’ve been in the show for two years, with breaks.
Had you seen Starlight Express before appearing in the show? What do you think of the show?
Yes I had – it’s an amazing show!
What is it like playing in the Starlighthalle (the theatre built in Bochum specifically to house the show)?
It’s great to skate the set with different levels, it’s such fun.
What are the Bochum audiences like?
It differs – in most cases the majority are very excited, and that really lifts up the show.
Your first language is English, so what is it like performing the show in German?
It’s hard at first to try and work out what every word means in order to act it fully!
How far does the skating element of the show make Starlight Express different from performing in other musical theatre productions?
It makes a huge difference, taking to account how challenging it is to sing and skate at the same time!
Did you know how to skate before you appeared in Starlight? If not, how was skate school?!
No I hadn’t learnt to skate before – skate school was scary! I wish I hadn’t had so much fear and got more out of it.
What are you like on your roller skates now?
After a year I feel pretty comfortable.
Have you experienced any skating-related injuries?
Yes, I broke a bone in my hand and had six weeks off. I also fell in warm up.
How do you get about offstage during the show – do you keep your skates on?
Yes, rolling is more fun than walking..!
What is your favourite song in the show?
“Locomotion”, because it’s so much fun to sing and dance.
What is your favourite part of the show?
The character Joule – I played first cast Joule for a year and I loved it!
What do you like most about performing this role?
The wig, make-up, costume, races – everything is fabulous.
Are there any other roles in the show that you would like to play?
I like playing Buffy and Ashley to be girly!
Was appearing in the show a personal ambition for you?
Yes, because my sister played Dinah in the UK, and I’ve loved it ever since.
What inspired you to pursue a career in musical theatre?
I followed my sisters’ footsteps all her life really! But I’ve loved every minute.
Who has been the biggest influence on your career?
My sister, Lucy-Jane Adcock.
What would your dream role be?
Do you miss anything about home when you are performing in Bochum?
My family and English food.
Are the cast in Bochum very close?
Yes – sometimes a little too close!
How would you spend your perfect day off?
Chilling and relaxing – trying to forget about the show just for one day and trying not to move to rest the muscles!
