The UK’s Georgina Hagen is currently appearing in the German-language version of Starlight Express in Bochum, Germany, where the show continues to play to packed houses after more than twenty years of performances in the specially built Starlighthalle Theatre… we caught up with Georgina for a quick Q&A about her role in the show.
How long have you been in the show in Bochum?
I just joined the show on June 3rd 2010.
Have you appeared in Starlight Express anywhere else in the world? If so, where?
Yes. I was the voice of control on the UK Tour.
What do you think of the show?
It’s the best show I have ever seen and it’s always been my dream to be in it.
How does playing in Bochum differ to playing the show elsewhere in the world?
Well, it’s much bigger here in terms of set!
What is it like playing in the specially-built Starlighthalle?
It’s hard work because it’s so big but it’s so much fun.
What are the Bochum audiences like?
They are very loud and supportive.
As it’s not your first language, what is it like performing the show in German?
A challenge! But we have brilliant teachers to help us.
How far does the skating element of the show make Starlight Express different from performing in other musical theatre productions?
It’s very different but it’s great to learn something new, plus it keeps me fit!
Did you know how to skate before you appeared in Starlight Express?
I could roll forwards and backwards.
Did you take part in skate school? How was it – do you have any interesting stories?
Yes! It was hard work, very tiring but so much fun. I was injured a couple of times and had some falls but I loved it!
What are you like on your roller skates now?
I’m OK – but everyday I learn something new.
Have you experienced any skating-related injuries?
A couple of minor injuries! Nothing major thank goodness.
How do you get about offstage during the show – do you keep your skates on?
Of course! There isn’t enough time to take them off!
Have you any disasters onstage – skating-related or otherwise?
I’ve fallen once so far and bounced across the stage. It was really funny!
What is your favourite song of the show?
Probably “Nur mit ihm”, it’s such a beautiful duet.
What is your favourite part of the show?
The races! We get to skate really fast.
What do you like most and least about performing this role?
I love everything about Dinah, there isn’t anything I don’t like.
Are there any other roles in the show that you would like to play?
Was appearing in the show a personal ambition for you?
Absolutely, I’ve wanted to be in this show my whole life, it means so much to me.
What inspired you to pursue a career in musical theatre?
My parents are in show business, so I grew up around it.
Who has been the biggest influence on your career?
My Grandad, he told me that everything is possible if you want it enough.
What would your dream role be?
My dream roles are Dinah and Pearl, and I’m getting to do both.
Do you miss anything about home when you are performing in Bochum?
Only my family and friends, but they visit me a lot.
Are the cast in Bochum very close?
Yes, we’re like one big family, I love it here!
How would you spend your perfect day off?
My perfect day off would be shopping and meeting up with some friends from the show for lunch or a coffee then going home and relaxing.
