I could say I have been passionate about musical theatre for as long as I can remember but that wouldn’t quite be true. I think the moment was actually about 30 years ago when I first heard the London cast recording of Evita. From that moment I was hooked. I watched every movie musical that appeared on television and devoured books and records, savouring every detail.
21 years ago I left school and came to work full-time in the theatre. Far from the glamour of the stage itself it was to work in a box office and after all those years I am still here, in a theatre box office selling tickets.
Over the years I have seen an awful lot of shows, some good and some bad. I have amassed a ridiculous amount of cast recordings on CD and continued to soak up all the information I could find on everything from Showboat and The Sound Of Music to Anyone Can Whistle and Whistle Down The Wind, but the passion has not abated.
Three years ago I started writing an intranet column for the staff of Really Useful. This gave me a chance to share what I know about musicals, and hopefully make people smile along the way. My own blog page followed where I have published my intranet work for a wider audience, and now I find myself as occasional contributor to this Really Useful Group website.
So here I am, still in box office where I have been lucky enough to work on some of the biggest hits of the last two decades, and still enjoying the buzz of working in the West End. The one big difference is that now I get to share my thoughts with you. I hope you enjoy them!
