Starlight Express Q&A with Matthew McKenna, Bochum
Electra - Starlight Express Bochum

Full Name:

Matthew McKenna

Where do you come from?

I am from Glasgow, which is in Scotland.

Role in the Show:

I am playing Electra and covering Greaseball.

How is it to be in Bochum/ in Germany?

Germany is a cool country and Bochum is nice, too. Many cities are quite nearby so you can have a fast trip to other cities in the “Ruhrgebiet”.

Was appearing in the show a personal ambition for you?

Yes, it was always my dream to skate in such a great theatre.

Is it your first engagement in Germany?

No, I did “Rocky Horror Show” and “We will Rock you” here in Germany before I came to STARLIGHT EXPRESS.

Which Audition did you do?

I auditioned in Bochum.

Could you imagine that you would be here in February 2012?

No, the whole thing was absolutely surreal for me before I came here.

Have you appeared in Starlight Express anywhere else in the world? If so, where?

No, I have never appeared in Starlight Express before.

Had you seen Starlight Express before appearing in the show?

Yes, I had seen the show in Bochum because I wanted to watch Chris Southgate, who is a very good performer and a friend of mine.

What do you think of the show?

I think the show is fantastic with all of its special effects and different characters. I always love every minute of it.

Did you know how to skate before you appeared in Starlight?

No, not at all. I had to learn it in Skateschool.

How was Skateschool for you?

Oh Skateschool was great fun, but also by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I am still shocked at how we could learn such a hard thing in a few months.

What are you like on your roller skates now? How do you feel on Skates?

I think I’m o.k. Of course I could be a lot better but I’m getting there.

Describe a day in Skateschool … what do you like, what is the hardest thing for you, what are you doing after work?

A normal day of Skateschool is a lot of repetition skating for getting better and better. At the beginning we had to practise in the corridor, where the probability for an injury was not as high as on stage or the Ballet room. After some time we practised in the Ballet room where we learned the choreography. And at the end we exercised on stage, which was the best part of Skateschool. For me spins were very hard work.
After one day of Skateschool I probably went home and played PlayStation to relax.

What is your favourite song of the show?

My favourite song is Rolling Stock.

What is your favourite part of the show?

I love Papa and Dustin. They are so much fun, I love watching them.

What inspired you to pursue a career in musical theatre?

I always loved to perform. So once I started practicing and from that moment on I wanted to become a member in a musical show.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career?

Definitely my parents. They discovered my ambition, put me into training and now I love them for that.

What would your dream role be?

I would love to play “Chris” in “Miss Saigon” or “Judas” in “Jesus Christ Superstar”.

Do you miss anything about home?

I miss “Irn-Bru”. And of course my friends and my family.

Are the cast in Bochum very close?

Yes, they are lovely and good people to have around. We are very close now like a big family, that’s what I like.

How would you spend your perfect day off?

My perfect day off would be a day in the sunshine at a pool. Just relax and catch some sun. Or if the weather was not good at all I would go shopping – I like buying some new clothes – or play computer games.

What does it mean for you to play especially Electra?

It’s a pleasure to be a part of another ‘Webber’ Show. It’s hard work, but I’m up to the challenge.
