After 26 previews and 337 regular performances at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre, the Tony Award nominated production will now close with final performance of original stars, Grammy Awards winning superstar Ricky Martin, Olivier Award winner Elena Roger and Tony Award winner Michael Cerveris.

The first national tour of Evita will launch in September 2013 at Providence Performing Arts Center.

PRESS RELEASE:

(Tuesday, December 11, 2012 — New York, NY)  Producers Hal Luftig and Scott Sanders announced today that the record-breaking and 2012 Tony Award-nominated production of Tim Rice andAndrew Lloyd Webber’s landmark musical EVITA—starring Grammy Award-winning international pop icon Ricky Martin (Che), Olivier Award-winning Argentinean actress Elena Roger (Eva) and Tony Award-winner Michael Cerveris (Perón)—will play its final performance on Saturday, January 26, 2013, after 26 previews and 337 regular performances at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre (1535 Broadway). It was previously announced that the show would recast following the departure of its original stars, and continue its open-ended run.

“Our extensive search for a new cast presented the significant challenges of not only replacing a high-caliber trio of stars but also synchronizing the schedules of potential replacements with that of the production,” said Mr. Luftig.  “Despite going down the road with a variety of artists, the planets have simply not aligned for us to engage the right talent at the right time.  Therefore, we have made the decision to end this incredible journey on a high note on January 26 with our original stars intact.”

Mr. Sanders added, “The style, grace and vision brought to this legendary musical by the cast, musicians and creative team exceeded our wildest expectations. We were thrilled by the diversity of the audiences that have filled the Marquis every evening and look forward to sharing this beautiful production with even larger audiences across the country beginning next fall.”

Directed by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Michael Grandage and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Rob Ashford, this first new Broadway production of EVITA since its premiere over 30 years ago also features Christina DeCicco as the alternate for Eva (Wed eve; Sat mat), Max von Essen as Magaldi and Rachel Potter as the Mistress. EVITA began previews Monday, March 12, 2012 and opened on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at The Marquis Theatre. The production’s First National Tour will launch September 2013 at Providence Performing Arts Center.

The creative team includes Tony Award-winning Scenic and Costume Designer Christopher Oram (Red), Tony Award-winning Lighting Designer Neil Austin (Red), Olivier Award-winning Sound Designer Mick Potter (Woman In White), Wig and Hair Designer Richard Mawbey (Frost/Nixon), Projection Designer Zachary Borovay (Rock of Ages), and Music Supervisor/Director Kristen Blodgette (The Phantom of the Opera), Orchestrations are by Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Cullen (Sunset Boulevard), and dance arrangements are by David Chase (Billy Elliot).

The cast of 36 also includes Ashley Amber, George Lee Andrews, Wendi Bergamini, Eric L. Christian, Kristine Covillo, John Cudia, Margot de La Barre, Bradley Dean, Rebecca Eichenberger, J. Austin Eyer, Melanie Field, Jennie Ford, Constantine Germanacos, Laurel Harris, Bahiyah Hibah, Nick Kenkel, Erica Mansfield, Emily Mechler, Ava-Riley Miles, Sydney Morton, Jessica Lea Patty, Aleks Pevec, Kristie Dale Sanders, Timothy Shew, Mavis Simpson-Ernst, Michaeljon Slinger, Johnny Stellard, Alex Michael Stoll, Daniel Torresand Matt Wall.

Since beginning previews on March 12, 2012 at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre, EVITA has broken the box office record seven times.  Before EVITA, the previous record for an eight performance week was $1,073,881 earned by The Drowsy Chaperone for the week ending December 10, 2006.  EVITA first broke that record – in only six performances – the week ending March 18, 2012 with a total gross of $1,167,685, then broke its own record the week ending March 25, 2012 with a gross of $1,410,365.  The production continued on the record-setting path and broke its own box office record an additional six times in the weeks ending April 1, 2012($1,424,700),  April 15, 2012 ($1,505,759),  April 29, 2012 ($1,515,746),  May 6, 2012 ($1,533,055) and May 20, 2012 ($1,586,362).

On June 26, 2012, the complete New Broadway Cast Recording of Evita was released by Masterworks Broadway and debuted at #1 on Billboard’s cast album chart and was the top selling iTunes Soundtrack in Argentina.  The 2-CD set, produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Nigel Wright, with Tim Rice as Executive Producer, is the first complete English language recording of the show since the original 1979 Broadway cast album.

Eva Perón used her beauty and charisma to rise meteorically from the slums of Argentina to the presidential mansion as First Lady. She won international acclaim and adoration from her own people as a champion of the poor, while glamour, power and greed made her one of the world’s first major political celebrities.  EVITA tells Eva’s passionate and tragic story through Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most dazzling and beloved score, including “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” “Buenos Aires,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” and “High Flying Adored,” together with “You Must Love Me,” the Oscar-winning hit from the film EVITA.

After researching the life of Eva Perón for many years, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber released EVITA in 1976 as a concept album with Julie Covington as Evita and it became a world-wide hit.  Soon after, the production debuted on stage in London’s West End starring Elaine Paige and directed by Hal Prince.  The production transferred to Broadway and opened in 1979 starring Patti LuPone, who went on to win one of the seven 1980 Tony Awards the show earned.  A major 1996 film of the musical was made starring Madonna as Evita and Antonio Banderas as Che.  Michael Grandage’s production of EVITA, which opened in 2006, took London by storm and garnered critical acclaim for the show and its leading lady, Elena Roger.

SCHEDULE:

The EVITA performance schedule is Monday at 8:00PM, Tuesday at 7:00PM, and Wednesday–Saturday at 8:00PM, with matinee performances on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2:00PM.  At Wednesday evening and Saturday matinee performances, the role of Eva is performed by Christina DeCicco (Glinda in Wicked; Sister Act).  Ricky Martin does not perform on Monday evenings; at those performances, the role of Che is performed by Max von Essen or Daniel Torres.  Schedule variance during the holiday season is as follows: There will be no evening performances on Monday, December 24 or Monday, December 31.  Additional matinee performances have been scheduled for Sunday, December 30 at 3:00pm and Sunday January 6 at 3:00pm. At all added Sunday performances, the role of Eva will be played by Elena Roger.

TICKETS:

Tickets range from $67-$147, and are on sale now. Purchase online at Ticketmaster.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or by visiting the Marquis Theatre Box Office at 1535 Broadway (entrance on 46thStreet between Broadway and 8th Avenue) in New York City.

The Story

Based on the classic novel Le Fantome de l’Opera by Gaston Leroux, the musical tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his command.

The original production of The Phantom of the Opera premiered in London in 1986, opened in New York on Broadway in 1988, and has been seen in over 119 cities worldwide. The Phantom of the Opera is the longest-running show in Broadway history.

The Las Vegas production

Is this production of Phantom different from what I have seen in New York or in my hometown?

Yes – Andrew Lloyd Webber and Hal Prince have revisited the show to create an all-new production, while maintaining the beloved original storyline and songs. Phantom at The Venetian features a new physical production with effects and enhancements made possible by modern-day technology, a custom-built theatre, and a team led by many of the original creators. This production promises surprises that will amaze and delight audiences, from first time guests to longtime Phantom fans.

How will Phantom at the Venetian differ from the original production?

There are a number of additions and enhancements in this production, including:

  • Enhancement and modernisation of illusions throughout the show – the producers have enlisted Jim Steinmeyer, who has worked with David Copperfield, to help develop some of these illusions.
  • Expansion of Maria Bjornson’s original set designs, including more elaborate operas within the show, and the grandest setting yet for the Phantom’s lair.
  • It will be performed in a custom-built theatre, designed by David Rockwell, that expands the environment of the Paris Opera House into the audience (please see Theatre section below for more information).
  • Use of sophisticated pyrotechnic effects on stage and throughout the house.
  • Use of several stunt men for exciting physical moments on stage.
  • The largest cast of any production of Phantom in the US.
  • An amazing chandelier experience unlike anything seen anywhere else in the world!

What have they cut?

This production is about 95 minutes long. Beyond the 20-minute intermission you have in other productions and the entr’acte, much of what has been revisited is the length of some transitional scenes and dance moments. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Hal Price worked to insure the Phantom experience would not be affected by this shorter run time.

Have they cut any of the songs?

No – all of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s timeless songs remain in this production. Some transitional musical moments have been adjusted by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and since there is no intermission, there is no second act overture / entr’acte.

Who is the Director?

Harold (Hal) Prince, the show’s original Director, is directing the Las Vegas production as well. Mr. Prince is the winner of 20 Tony Awards, more than anyone else in history.

What is the running time?
95 minutes, no intermission.

Is there a live orchestra?
Yes – there will be an orchestra of 19 playing for all performances.

Casting

Please visit the official show website at www.phantomlasvegas.com and check the “News” section for a complete list of all 40 cast members.

The theatre

The Venetian is constructing a brand-new theatre specifically for this production of Phantom.

The theatre is designed by David Rockwell, one of the most renowned and celebrated designers working today. His work includes the Kodak Theatre in LA (home of the Academy Awards), plus many restaurants and nightclubs in New York , LA and Las Vegas.

The theatre itself will transport you to the Paris Opera House – with detail, design and action surrounding audiences – creating a Phantom experience like no other.

Miscellaneous

What is the dress code?
Phantom audiences are asked to adhere to the attire guidelines of The Venetian.

For what ages is Phantom appropriate?
Phantom has a few scary moments and effects that might startle younger viewers. There is no foul language or nudity. While parents should make the individual decision for their own child, we suggest more careful consideration in bringing children under 10.

Every person must have a ticket to enter the theatre, regardless of age. Children under the age of five are not permitted.

Is there an official website?
Yes – please visit www.phantomlasvegas.com, and sign up to receive news and updates about the production.

The use of cameras, tape recorders, or any similar device in any theatre auditorium is strictly forbidden. This includes the use of mobile phones, voice recorders, and any other recording device.

Any professionally recorded footage you may see on our official websites and channels has been filmed by prior arrangement with The Really Useful Group and the relevant arrangements have been put in place with regard to copyright legislation and the appropriate agreements with the musicians, actors, and other production staff involved. Unauthorised filming during a live performance is very distracting to the actors and fellow audience members in addition to being in breach of copyright.

If film clips created using any of the above forbidden devices are brought to our attention, these will be removed as soon as possible.
