The Story

Based on the classic novel Le Fantome de l’Opera by Gaston Leroux, the musical tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his command.

The original production of The Phantom of the Opera premiered in London in 1986, opened in New York on Broadway in 1988, and has been seen in over 119 cities worldwide. The Phantom of the Opera is the longest-running show in Broadway history.

The Las Vegas production

Is this production of Phantom different from what I have seen in New York or in my hometown?

Yes – Andrew Lloyd Webber and Hal Prince have revisited the show to create an all-new production, while maintaining the beloved original storyline and songs. Phantom at The Venetian features a new physical production with effects and enhancements made possible by modern-day technology, a custom-built theatre, and a team led by many of the original creators. This production promises surprises that will amaze and delight audiences, from first time guests to longtime Phantom fans.

How will Phantom at the Venetian differ from the original production?

There are a number of additions and enhancements in this production, including:

  • Enhancement and modernisation of illusions throughout the show – the producers have enlisted Jim Steinmeyer, who has worked with David Copperfield, to help develop some of these illusions.
  • Expansion of Maria Bjornson’s original set designs, including more elaborate operas within the show, and the grandest setting yet for the Phantom’s lair.
  • It will be performed in a custom-built theatre, designed by David Rockwell, that expands the environment of the Paris Opera House into the audience (please see Theatre section below for more information).
  • Use of sophisticated pyrotechnic effects on stage and throughout the house.
  • Use of several stunt men for exciting physical moments on stage.
  • The largest cast of any production of Phantom in the US.
  • An amazing chandelier experience unlike anything seen anywhere else in the world!

What have they cut?

This production is about 95 minutes long. Beyond the 20-minute intermission you have in other productions and the entr’acte, much of what has been revisited is the length of some transitional scenes and dance moments. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Hal Price worked to insure the Phantom experience would not be affected by this shorter run time.

Have they cut any of the songs?

No – all of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s timeless songs remain in this production. Some transitional musical moments have been adjusted by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and since there is no intermission, there is no second act overture / entr’acte.

Who is the Director?

Harold (Hal) Prince, the show’s original Director, is directing the Las Vegas production as well. Mr. Prince is the winner of 20 Tony Awards, more than anyone else in history.

What is the running time?
95 minutes, no intermission.

Is there a live orchestra?
Yes – there will be an orchestra of 19 playing for all performances.

Casting

Please visit the official show website at www.phantomlasvegas.com and check the “News” section for a complete list of all 40 cast members.

The theatre

The Venetian is constructing a brand-new theatre specifically for this production of Phantom.

The theatre is designed by David Rockwell, one of the most renowned and celebrated designers working today. His work includes the Kodak Theatre in LA (home of the Academy Awards), plus many restaurants and nightclubs in New York , LA and Las Vegas.

The theatre itself will transport you to the Paris Opera House – with detail, design and action surrounding audiences – creating a Phantom experience like no other.

Miscellaneous

What is the dress code?
Phantom audiences are asked to adhere to the attire guidelines of The Venetian.

For what ages is Phantom appropriate?
Phantom has a few scary moments and effects that might startle younger viewers. There is no foul language or nudity. While parents should make the individual decision for their own child, we suggest more careful consideration in bringing children under 10.

Every person must have a ticket to enter the theatre, regardless of age. Children under the age of five are not permitted.

Is there an official website?
Yes – please visit www.phantomlasvegas.com, and sign up to receive news and updates about the production.
